Al's Research on Clifford Brown
Al Hood has been researching Clifford Brown, his doctoral research topic, at the University of Miami, for nearly 12 years and is considered one of the foremost authorities on his life. He served as chief researcher and chief interviewer for Dr. Nick Catalano’s biography, Clifford Brown: The Life and Art of the Legendary Jazz Trumpeter.
For the most complete, up-to-date discography on Brown (including all un-issued performances), you should purchase the “Clifford Brown Discography” compiled by Bob Weir. It is published by Names & Numbers, The Netherlands, © 2004, ISBN # 90-77260-30-X

Research Updates
On occasion, when I visit Wilmington or find some new, exciting information on Brownie I will post it here. My most recent research trip to Wilmington, DE (March 2006) was very productive. I spent a lot of time with Mr. Kenyon Camper, Howard High historian and a schoolmate of Clifford’s, in Howard’s memorabilia room, which was once the school’s library. Besides receiving some intriguing information about the history of the school, we uncovered a news article that mentions Clifford playing his trumpet from 1943 and another mentioning Brown playing ‘Taps’ from 1945. I also felt lucky to have spent time in and photograph the Howard High auditorium, where Clifford played many a note! It is still in immaculate condition and still looks as it did in Clifford’s day. I also had the privilege of visiting the homes of Ida Mae Bey, Brown’s one-time girlfriend, and Leon and Margaret Brown, Clifford’s brother and sister-in-law, who was also a close friend of his. They provided wonderful interviews, conversation and hospitality and I even got to hear Ida Mae play piano at the Wilmington Salvation Army! In addition to some days scouring directories at the Wilmington Historical Society, my wife Jennifer and I visited Brown’s home site, grave site in the Mt. Zion cemetery and the site of his fatal car accident outside of Bedford, PA on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Visiting Wilmington is always like taking a step back into the past - I highly recommend it!
